Girl In A Coma: Tiny Desk Concert

January 30, 2012 The San Antonio trio gets back to basics to explore its songs' forms and the soul of its lyrics.

By Felix Contreras

One of the best features of our Tiny Desk Concert series is the occasional opportunity to hear a band perform its songs as they were written: with just an acoustic guitar and unamplified voices. That's the case with Girl In A Coma. In an interview, singer Nina Diaz said she writes the band's songs by closing herself off with just a notepad and her acoustic guitar. Which is slightly different than what we get on the band's albums: loud, crunchy guitars and seamless interplay between Phanie Diaz's drums and Jenn Alva's melodic bass work.

For the three songs Girl In A Coma performed during a recent stop in the NPR Music offices on a short East Coast tour, the San Antonio trio deftly gets back to basics to explore not just the form of its songs, but also the soul of its lyrics. You don't easily forget Nina Diaz's voice after you hear it for the first time, and as her songwriting skills grow, so do her vocal performances — it feels as if there's less effort and more emoting.

Nina's sister Phanie Diaz and bassist Alva pull off what I've found to be the Holy Grail of music-making: playing as one rather than merely accompanying each other. Being on stage for a long period of time with the same musicians creates a form of unspoken communication. Girl In A Coma's great songs and riveting performances all benefit from a sense that, while one member writes the songs, all three inhabit them.

Girl in a Coma: 'We're the girls next door, we're your sisters, we're your tias.'

Check out the video interview and article on Girl in a Coma featured on the front page of CNN.com today! Part of CNN's In America series, the interview took place last summer when the band opened for Joan Jett and the Blackhearts at the Coney Island Summer Concert Series.

BLOG from Phanie

Hello Everyone!

It's been awhile since we blogged but here is a quick one for ya. Jenn is working on a video so we should have that soon. Tour has been great! We started off playing the biggest show yet in San Antonio to over 2500 people! Dallas, Brooklyn,NYC, Chicago were some of the highlights of the tour. Got to see Joan at our NY show. Made some awesome new friends, our tourmates The Coathangers. They left us already and we miss them so if you have a sec go and check them out. Right now we are on tour with Black Box Revelation, a Belgium rocking band. Yesterday we joined up with Fences who will be with us the rest of the way.

SADLY, we had to cancel Denver. Along the way Nina picked up a nasty bug which lead to a sinus infection. She is recovering now and we should be all ready to go in time for Utah.

We got to play some tunes for the Carson Daly show and even charted on Billboard's Hotseekers charts! Thank you to everyone who has bought our new record Exits & All The Rest! Help us continue spreading the word about the album. We are just getting started! We have a lot more to come and a lot more touring to do for this record... and we promise to be back Denver!

We love you all and hope to see you out on the road!

Denver Show Canceled

Girl in a Coma regrets to announce that the show tomorrow night (11/23/11) at Marquis Theater in Denver is canceled. Nina is sick and lost her voice last night during the show in Minneapolis. Doctor's orders that she gets some rest so that she can heal. The rest of the tour will continue as scheduled.

Hear the New Album on NPR First Listen

Exits & All the Rest is streaming on NPR Music all week! Take a listen and leave a comment and let us know what you think!

First blog on the new website

We are at home, rehearsing for the new songs for tour. Just thought we'd take the time to write a blog about the new album.

Exits & All the Rest is probably the rawest album we’ve made so far. We recorded on analog for the first time. It is definitely a progression for us. I think we are becoming very comfortable in the studio now. We have a lot more confidence in what we are doing and we are a lot more vocal about what we want.

We recorded in Austin, TX with Mike McCarthy. We played live together and Nina went in for her overdubs after. It was the first time we cut songs as a band instead of recording our instruments separately. We also did songs in a few takes. Just a lot of vibing and chemistry going on in the studio, which we hope you can hear in this record.

The year we were writing and making Exits & All the Rest was a very emotional one for us. Each of us had different personal things and changes happening. We grew as a band and we grew as people and I think you can hear this on the record. Jenn came up with the title for Exits & All the Rest. It has a lot to do with the year we went through. There are always ways out of anything and then there is dealing with all the rest.

“Sly” is one of our favorite songs on the album right now. It’s a new sound for us. “Smart” is one of our favorites as well. At first Jenn and I (Phanie) were not into it. We thought it was way to poppy. Now its one of our favorite songs. It just molded itself into our brains. It reminds us of Echo and the Bunnymen . Just good vibes. “Adjust” is fun to play live because of the dynamics. “Mother's Lullaby” has a lot of deep meaning to it. Family is very important to us…and this is our song to them.

We hope you enjoy this record as much as we do. It is definitely now our favorite album yet and we are looking forward to playing the songs live.
